Let's find out a little bit about the company that makes it. How did it come about?

Who makes Nutrilite?

In 1934, multivitamin and multi-mineral supplements were definitely a thing of the future. In fact, most people didn't even think about taking a vitamin. That changed when Carl Rehnborg, founder of the Nutrilite brand, created his first nutritional product.

He began to think about these things in the early 1920s, when he was living in China. There, he saw widespread malnutrition and disease; this led him to think about what people ate and how it affected their overall health.

Here's what he saw:

If people lived in farming communities in China, they ate plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, and were much healthier than their neighbors in the city, where diets contained much more salt, sugar and fat, and many fewer if any fresh fruits and vegetables. He also saw widespread diseases like scurvy and beriberi in the cities, even though these were largely absent in China's farming communities.

It was while he was living in China that he thought about using nutritional supplements to get the elements that could be lacking from the typical diet so as to improve health.

To this end, he began to experiment and himself while he was still living in China. He, too, had a pretty meager diet, as did much of the rest of the country. He created soups with local vegetables, grasses and herbs. In what was a surprising maneuver, he also used rusty nails in his soups (to provide the iron that could be leached from them during the cooking process, although he didn't eat the nails themselves). And, he also included limestone and animal bones that had been ground up to provide extra calcium.

Now, you might imagine that this soup wasn't particularly good tasting, but it did make him much healthier. He and those he shared it with became much healthier than those who had only been given typical rations.

Once back in the United States, he set up a lab for himself on Balboa Island of California. There, he experimented for the next six years with different plant varieties. He dried the plants and still preserved their nutritional value. His first product was a formulation of parsley, watercress and alfalfa. This underwent further changes and ultimately became the first multivitamin and multi-mineral supplement to be sold in North America. And thus, in 1934, the first Nutrilite project was introduced. Today, the company is a leader in nutritional development, innovation and research.
